In our interview, Todd Friedman ‘83 speaks about his two years at Mercersburg, where he was a significant contributor to the swimming and water polo teams. He notes how participating on these teams taught him the importance of teamwork and collaboration, a value he carried with him throughout his military career. At West Point, Friedman continued to participate on the swimming and diving teams along with his older brother. He served in the Army for fifteen years: four years active-duty and eleven years in the reserves. Friedman fulfilled staff positions in air defense artillery units, directing nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare. Additionally, he served as a platoon leader and company commander, the latter of which he considered to be his favorite position. Friedman doesn’t ignore the challenges he faced at West Point and in the Army, such as antisemitism, but he highlights the importance of perseverance. Friedman reflects on the fraternity of the Army, and his pride of service, as well as other lessons he learned in the Army.
